Huge growth in new markets
“The coffee industry in the Middle East is growing very rapidly,” Maria said, and this coffee demand includes all forms of coffee – green coffee, roasted coffee and coffee beverages.
She told me, “In the United Arab Emirates, the demand started about 10 years ago. Now it has what she considers a mature coffee culture.”
According to ICO statistics, coffee imports into Saudi Arabia increased by 42.8% between 2008 and 2018. Türkiye grew by 192.8%, while the United Arab Emirates grew by 249%.
The figures are staggering: During the same period, U.S. and Japanese imports grew by just 19% and 6.8% respectively. With the exception of the UAE, re-exports of coffee from the Middle East are low, meaning consumption and interest are increasing significantly across the region.
Focusing solely on growth rates may affect our view of overall consumption patterns—after all, the United States consumed more than 26 times more coffee than Saudi Arabia in 2008. However, the growth is noteworthy and explains the budding interest in the area.
Maria believes Saudi Arabia’s booming coffee consumption market has played a major role in recent growth and says a new era has begun. This is a big country with a population of more than 32 million people, and they took an important step a few months ago. She was referring to the relaxation of regulations that previously required businesses to separate male and female customers, and while many businesses still do so, others are relaxing the rules. As Maria puts it, “Being a dry country, this socialization is happening around coffee shops and cafes.”
However, even before this regulatory change, the importance of the coffee market cannot be underestimated. In February 2019, the Dubai government invested US$35 million to build the DMCC Coffee Center. The 7500 m² space houses the SCA training campus, coffee quality laboratory and cupping laboratory. It is expected to process 20,000 tons of mung beans per year, with an estimated value of US$100 million.
